How Stress Affects My Period & What I’m Doing About It (Cortisol, Hormone Imbalance, and Living with PCOS)
Hey beautiful,
Let’s have a real conversation.
You know, for the longest time I just thought my period was disrespectful — showing up when it wants, disappearing for months, or showing up with full-blown attitude (cramps, acne, mood swings, all of it!). But deep down, I knew something else was going on.
I’m someone living with Insulin Resistant PCOS, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that stress is not just a feeling — it’s a full-on hormonal disruptor. Especially when you’re already fighting for balance.
When Everything Felt Like Too Much
Between moving countries, starting life in Canada, being a student, getting married, trying to get pregnant, dealing with PCOS symptoms, weight gain, and just trying to be okay… I didn’t even realize how stressed I was. I was constantly on edge — anxious, exhausted, irritated over little things.
And then… my period ghosted me again.
What I Didn't Know About Stress & PCOS
Turns out stress releases cortisol (that’s your fight-or-flight hormone), and when it's always high, it throws everything off:
-
It messes with your blood sugar and insulin,
-
Increases inflammation in your body,
-
And can literally stop your ovulation from happening.
So yeah — stress can actually make your PCOS symptoms worse.
And for me? That’s exactly what it did.
What I’m Doing About It (And It's Helping!)
Now I didn’t wake up and fix it all in one day. But these little changes? Whew. They've made a difference.
1. I Had to Learn to Rest on Purpose
I realized I was always “doing,” never “being.” Now I try to sleep better, nap when I need it, and let go of guilt when I say, “I just need a break.”
2. My Morning Quiet Time
Most mornings now, I make tea (usually clove or ginger), say a prayer, and breathe. No phone. No rush. Just me, my thoughts, and God.
3. Gentle Movement Over Punishment
Instead of forcing gym sessions that stress me more, I now walk, stretch, or just dance to music I love. Moving with joy instead of stress has been healing.
4. Mindful Eating
I now take time to actually sit and eat. Not in front of a screen. Not while rushing. I eat slow, thank God for my food, and start with my veggies — always.
5. Saying “No” Without Explaining
I had to start protecting my peace. I stopped saying yes to everything. I unfollowed accounts that drained me and stepped away from stressful conversations.
My Little Love Note to You
Beautiful woman reading this, if your period has been wild, your mood up and down, or your body just feels off — don’t overlook stress. Sometimes it’s not the food or the meds… it’s just that your body is tired and overwhelmed.
Say this with me:
“My body is not broken. It is protecting me. It is asking for care, not criticism.”
Give yourself the grace to breathe.
You're not lazy. You're healing. And I'm cheering you on every step of the way.
