What the Color of Your Period Blood Might Mean

Hi HealthierHer,

It’s been a while, how has life been treating you lately?

Me? Hmm… honestly, it’s been tough. Lack of motivation has been dragging me. I pick up my laptop to write something and, before I know it, I’ve closed it back in seconds. My spirit is willing but my body is just not cooperating. Whew! I know some people might say it’s laziness, but girl, if you know, you know.

Today though, I got a little spark of motivation, so here I am again sharing my little knowledge with you. And today we’re talking about period blood color yep, that thing no one wants to talk about but lowkey wonders about 👀

🔹 Bright RedFresh and steady flow

This is the classic “normal” period blood. Usually seen at the start of your period, it’s a sign that everything’s working fine. It means your body is shedding the uterine lining steadily and that ovulation likely happened healthy eggs, healthy cycle!

🔹 Dark Red or MaroonOlder blood or slow flow

You might see this after you’ve been lying down or toward the end of your period. It’s still normal just a bit slower flow, and sometimes it might come with small clots.

🔹 Brown or RustyOld blood

This is very common at the beginning or the end of your period. It’s just blood that’s had time to oxidize (basically, it interacted with oxygen). It’s nothing to panic about.
🧠 PS: Women with PCOS often see this more than the bright red type, due to delayed shedding.

🔹 PinkLight flow or mixed with cervical fluid

This might show up if you're spotting, on hormonal birth control, or have low estrogen levels. If you notice pink spotting often, you might want to talk to your doctor. Hormones might be out of balance.

🔹 OrangeMixed with cervical mucus or possible infection

Orange period blood especially if it smells weird or feels off might be a sign of infection like BV (bacterial vaginosis) or even an STI. Please don’t wait check in with your doctor.

🔹 GrayCould be an infection or miscarriage (if pregnant)

This one’s a big red flag 🚩. If you ever see grayish discharge or tissue, especially with a bad smell, it could mean bacterial vaginosis or, if you're pregnant, possibly a miscarriage. Please seek medical attention ASAP.

Your period is like your body's monthly report card it tells you things if you’re paying attention. And as women (especially those of us with PCOS), we need to understand what our body is saying.

Let’s keep learning, unlearning, and sharing.

Love always,
HealthierHer

What is PCOS? My PCOS Story: From Confusion to Clarity

My PCOS Story: From Confusion to Clarity Hey HealthierHer,  Welcome back! Today, I want to start off by sharing a little story about myself. As you all know, my name is Uloma. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in 2021, a few months after I moved to Canada from South Korea.

Understanding the 4 Types of PCOS: Which One Are You?

Hi HealthierHer,  Welcome back!  (PS: I missed you!) Before we dive into PCOS like detectives at a hormonal crime scene… here’s a quick joke for the vibe: Why did the ovary start a podcast? Because it had too many episodes and needed to vent! 🎙️ Okay, now that we’re all smiling—let’s talk about something that totally blew my mind when I first learned it: PCOS isn’t one-size-fits-all! 🤯 Yep, there are actually different types of PCOS , and each one has its own triggers, symptoms, and management style. When I first found out, it was during prep for the very first meetup of a PCOS support community I started at my university. As I was reading articles for my presentation, I stumbled across this information and had one of those “Wait… this makes sense now!” moments. It felt so validating to finally understand why my symptoms looked the way they did. So, let’s take a quick look at the 4 main types of PCOS
